Smad3 is a member of the TGF-β receptor family. It is a potent inhibitor of differentiation, proliferation, and apoptosis. Smad3 binds to the TGF-β type II receptor (TβRII) and then migrates into the nucleus to form a complex with SMAD4. This complex activates transcription of downstream genes that inhibit cell cycle progression, stimulate cell differentiation and inhibit apoptosis.
