Hyponine D is an alkaloid that is isolated from the Chinese herb Tripterygium hypoglaucum. It has been shown to have antibacterial, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory properties. Hyponine D appears to act as a competitive inhibitor of the enzyme phospholipase A2, which is responsible for the release of arachidonic acid from the cell membrane. This leads to inhibition of the production of prostaglandins and leukotrienes, which are inflammatory mediators. Hyponine D also has a number of other activities such as inhibiting bacterial growth by binding to DNA-dependent RNA polymerase, preventing transcription and replication, or preventing protein synthesis by inhibiting ribosomal translocation.
