Ruthenium(II) chloride is a cytotoxic agent that exhibits sequence specificity. It has been shown to be activated by the presence of DNA and to have significant cytotoxicity against tumor cells in vitro. Ruthenium(II) chloride is an antitumor agent that has been shown to damage DNA, inhibit RNA synthesis, and cause cell membrane changes. This compound is also known for its ability to bind with silicon dioxide surfaces, which may be due to ruthenium-silicon complexes. The diameter of the complex can be determined through X-ray diffraction data or scanning electron microscopy images. Ruthenium(II) chloride has been used in hybridization assays as well as cancer-related research and treatment.
