1,7-Naphthyridine-4-carbonitrile is a diagnostic agent that can be used to diagnose autoimmune diseases. It is an analog of technetium and binds to the same receptors on the cell surface as Tc99m. The binding of 1,7-Naphthyridine-4-carbonitrile to these receptors triggers a cascade of intracellular events that lead to increased levels of intracellular calcium ions. This increase in intracellular calcium ions leads to the production of proteins that are involved in inflammatory processes, such as cytokines and prostaglandins. These proteins are released from the affected cells and bind with other cells nearby, causing inflammation in those cells too.
