Yttrium chloride hexahydrate is a chemical compound that exhibits fluorescence. It is used in radiation detection and as a phosphor in x-ray detectors. Yttrium chloride hexahydrate emits light when it is mixed with ethylene diamine and irradiated with ultraviolet light. This reaction can be used to detect the presence of chloride ions in solutions, as the emission of light will be proportional to the concentration of chloride ions present. The emission of light can also be used as a probe for other fluorophores, such as pluronic f127 or n-dimethyl formamide.
