Iron(III) Bromide is a redox reagent that is used in analytical chemistry as a catalyst. It has been shown to be capable of catalyzing the reaction of β-unsaturated ketones with chloride, producing an alkyl bromide and an α-bromo acid. Iron(III) Bromide has also been shown to be effective in regenerative medicine due to its ability to control the synthesis of proteins that are involved in cellular growth, such as covid-19. Iron(III) Bromide is also an efficient method for the preparation of α-bromo acids from β-unsaturated ketones. Iron(III) Bromide can be prepared by reacting iron metal with bromine.
Iron(III) Bromide has a redox potential of -1.8 V vs SCE at pH 7, which makes it useful for analytical chemistry and preparative methods.
