2-Naphthoxyacetic acid sodium salt (2NOAS) is a nitrophenolate that has been shown to be a sensitizer. It reacts with proteins and nucleic acids, forming covalent bonds with amino acids and nucleic acids. This reaction leads to the formation of a cavity in the protein or DNA molecule, which can be seen as a supramolecular assembly. The homologues of 2NOAS are also known as sensitizers. They have been shown to cause photoisomerization reactions in addition to their sensitizing activity. 2NOAS has been used as a dye for staining cells and tissues due to its fluorescence properties and has been detected in nature as an intermediate in the biosynthesis of certain compounds such as clofibrate, cholic acid, and oxycholic acid.
2NOAS is often used in cancer research because it can form covalent bonds with DNA bases: A-T, G-
