Tetramisole is a potent anthelmintic agent that belongs to the group of thionyl chloride intermediates. It is used as a parasiticide in veterinary medicine and for the treatment of intestinal parasites in humans. Tetramisole is effective against roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, pin worms, and tapeworms. The mechanism of action of tetramisole is not fully understood but it has been shown to be hydrolyzed by hydrochloric acid to form 2-(2-imino-1,3-thiazolidin-3-yl)-1-phenylethanol (PTZ), which is an inhibitor of protein synthesis.
