1-Benzyl-5-bromo-1H-indole is an indole that reacts with metallation to produce 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline. This reaction can be done in the presence of a base such as sodium methoxide or potassium tert-butoxide and a metal halide such as copper(I) bromide or silver(I) bromide. It was isolated in yields of 25% from the reaction of 5-bromoindole with benzaldehyde. The syntheses of isatins and their analogs have been accomplished by carbonylation of indoles with phosporane and alcohols in the presence of aluminum chloride. In this way, 1-(2'-chlorobenzyl)-5-(trifluoromethyl)indole was obtained.
