Thallium nitrate is a very soluble inorganic compound that contains the rare earth metal thallium. It is commonly used as an antiseptic and as a colorant for glass. Thallium nitrate reacts with fatty acids to produce thallium soaps, which have been shown to have some physiological effects. The reaction of thallium nitrate with sodium citrate produces sodium thallate, which is then reacted with hydrogen peroxide to form hydrogen thallide. Hydrogen thallide can be used as a catalyst for sample preparation or wastewater treatment applications. Thallium nitrate has been shown to have redox potentials of -1.5 V, which are favorable for use in combination therapy groups. It also has thermodynamic data available at 25°C (77°F).
