β-(1,2,4-Triazol-3-yl)-DL-alanine is a neutral amino acid that is synthesized by the enzyme histidine ammonia-lyase. β-(1,2,4-Triazol-3-yl)-DL-alanine has been shown to inhibit protein synthesis in E. coli and S. typhimurium. The inhibition of protein synthesis may be due to the fact that β-(1,2,4-triazol-3-yl)-DL-alanine competes with histidine for binding to the regulatory site on the synthetase enzyme. This competitive inhibition prevents the formation of a functional enzyme complex with ATP and αKG.
β-(1,2,4-Triazol-3-yl)-DL-alanine also inhibits corynebacterium glutamicum and corynebacterium daltons as well as other members of the genus Corynebacter
