Lead(II) molybdate is a nonpolar solvent that is used in the purification of ethylene diamine. This compound has an unusual property of absorbing light very efficiently at low wavelengths, which can be used for analytical methods. Lead(II) molybdate also has antimicrobial properties and can be used to treat wastewater. The mechanism of its antimicrobial activity is not well known, but it may be due to its ability to bind metal ions, such as Fe3+, which are required for the synthesis of many important biomolecules such as DNA and proteins. Lead(II) molybdate has been shown to have a significant effect on thermal expansion.
