4-Dodecanol is an organic compound that can be synthesized by catalytic hydrogenation of dodecyl alcohol. It is a primary hydroxyl with a four-carbon chain. 4-Dodecanol has been used as a chemical intermediate in the production of polymers and perfluorinated hydrocarbons, which are used in applications such as refrigerants, coatings, adhesives, and surfactants. 4-Dodecanol is also used as a solvent for cellulose acetate butyrate and cellulose nitrate. It has been shown to react with acid catalysts to form esters or ethers. In addition, 4-dodecanol has functional groups that allow it to react with peroxides and ketones to form epoxides or oxetanes respectively. 4-Dodecanol can also function as an alkylating agent via electrophilic alkylation reactions.
