Azobenzene-4,4'-dicarbonyl Dichloride is a photoactive compound that has been used as a photosensitizer to initiate photochemical reactions in organic solvents. This compound has been shown to be effective in the photochemical conversion of formamide to formaldehyde. It was also found to have affinity for elemental chlorine, which is why it can be used as a chlorinating agent. The thermal analysis of this compound showed that it decomposes at 100°C and has a molecular weight of 266. The 13C-NMR spectroscopy revealed the presence of several carbonyl groups and also showed that the molecule contains two azobenzene rings with an attached dichloride group. The FTIR spectrum confirmed the presence of carbonyl groups and also indicated that this molecule is hydrophilic.
