4-Propyl-1,1'-biphenyl is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon that is used as a test compound for the identification of nonvolatile compounds in solid samples. It is also used to determine the concentration of naphthalenes and biaryls in an unknown sample. 4-Propyl-1,1'-biphenyl has been shown to have long-chain alkylbenzenes, such as phenanthrene and anthracene, which are polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. This compound has been shown to be quantitatively nonvolatile and soluble in benzene and chloroform.
