Dimethyl 4,4'-stilbenedicarboxylate is an acetylating agent that selectively acetylates the hydroxyl group of ethane. This compound is used as an intermediate for the preparation of pyrolysis gasoline and also as a raw material for the production of dimethyl ether. Acetylation of this compound can be achieved by heating with acetic anhydride in the presence of a base catalyst. The dehydration of this compound can be achieved by heating with phosphoric acid in the presence of air or oxygen.
