A method for the determination of arsenious and pentavalent arsenic in drinking water by ammonium persulfate oxidation. The arsenious is oxidized to arsenous acid, which reacts with p-hydroxybenzoic acid to form a red chromophore. The pentavalent arsenic is oxidized to an unstable intermediate that decays to arsine gas. The gas is then quantified using chemiluminescence detection. This method has been used for the detection of triclocarban, triclosan, and other halophenols as impurities in commercial ammonium cerium(IV) sulfate dihydrate.
