Diethyl iodomethylphosphonate is a synthetic chemical that inhibits the enzyme HIV-1 protease. It binds to the active site of the enzyme and prevents it from cleaving viral polyproteins, which leads to a decrease in viral infectivity. Diethyl iodomethylphosphonate has been shown to be an inhibitor of the human enzymes tenofovir (an antiviral drug) and dipeptidyl peptidase IV (a digestive enzyme). This substance also forms hydrogen bonds with chloride ions, which is important for its biochemical properties. The diethyl ester functional group is a chromophore, which allows this compound to absorb light at specific wavelengths. The fatty acid functional group on the molecule provides asymmetric synthesis; this means that only one enantiomer will form from a reaction. The asymmetric synthesis makes this compound useful in stereoselective reactions because one enantiomer will react while the other remains unchanged.
