Description

5-Methyl-1H-pyrrolo[2,3-c]pyridine (5MP) is a potent inhibitor of human hepatitis C virus (HCV) replication. As an inhibitor of HCV, 5MP blocks viral replication by inhibiting the viral protease, which is essential for viral maturation and release. 5MP has been shown to inhibit HCV in cell culture and in vivo. 5MP has also been shown to be selective against other viruses, such as HIV-1 and HSV-1. Comparing the plasma exposure levels of 5MP with those of other drugs that are used for chronic hepatitis C treatment showed that 5MP has a desirable index profile. In addition, the selectivity index was calculated based on the inhibition of gapdh expression after treatment with different concentrations of 5MP, which indicated that it would be possible to optimize its selectivity by adjusting its dose.
