Trans-3-chlorocyclobutane-1-carboxylic acid is a byproduct of the thermal cracking process. The thermolysis of chlorocyclobutanols produces trans-3-chlorocyclobutane-1-carboxylic acid and cis-3,4,5,6-tetrachlorocyclopentane carboxylic acid. Trans-3-chlorocyclobutane-1-carboxylic acid is also produced when ethene reacts with chlorine in the presence of a catalyst. Trans 3 chlorocyclobutane 1 carboxylic acid has been used as an intermediate for making other chemical compounds such as pharmaceuticals or dyes. The electron spin resonance spectra of trans 3 chlorocyclobutane 1 carboxylic acid show that the molecule has a conformation that is stabilized by the electron spin resonance effect.
