Product Information
3-Hydroxy-o-methyl-L-tyrosine is a metabolite of L-tyrosine that is formed by the addition of a hydroxyl group to the 3 position. This reaction is catalyzed by decarboxylase and occurs in rat liver. 3-Hydroxy-o-methyltyrosine has been found to be an inhibitor of monoamine oxidase A, which is an enzyme in the brain that breaks down dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. This inhibition leads to increased levels of these neurotransmitters in the brain. 3-Hydroxy-o-methyltyrosine can also inhibit catechol O methyltransferase, which catalyzes the conversion of catecholamines to methylated metabolites. The product of this reaction is homovanillic acid (HVA), which can be measured using fluorimetric methods. Preparative liquid chromatography with radioactivity detection may also be used for analysis.
