9-Hydroxy-4-methoxyacridine is a fluorescent compound that is used in the chromatographic science field for the detection of impurities. It binds to DNA by intercalating with bases and can be used as an antiarrhythmic drug. The compound is not active against bacterial or viral infections, but has been shown to be effective against some protozoa such as Plasmodium falciparum. 9-Hydroxy-4-methoxyacridine has also been shown to increase the pharmacokinetic properties of quinidine, which may be due to its ability to increase plasma protein binding and reduce renal clearance. This compound is not toxic and does not produce any adverse effects in humans at therapeutic doses.
