5-Chloro-1-benzofuran-2-carboxamide is a synthetic cannabinoid that has been shown to have anticancer activity. It is an agonist of the endocannabinoid receptor, CB2 and inhibits cancer cell proliferation in vitro. 5-Chloro-1-benzofuran-2-carboxamide also prevents the formation of new blood vessels (angiogenesis) in vivo. The drug binds to the bacterial enzyme gyrase, which causes it to break down DNA strands. This causes a cell cycle arrest and results in apoptosis. 5CbzfC was found to be effective against a wide range of cancer cells including breast, prostate, lung, and skin cancers. The mode of action is not yet fully understood but may involve inhibition of protein synthesis or other mechanisms involving G proteins or G protein coupled receptors.
