This compound is also used in food chemistry, where it is employed in the production of flavors and fragrances, as well as pesticide formulations. Methyl 2-(4-hydroxyphenoxy)propanoate is a contaminant that can be found in some alcoholic beverages. It reacts with chloride ions to form methyl chloride, which is subsequently hydrolyzed to form hydrogen chloride and fatty acids.
