Tropane is a tropane molecule that has a tetranuclear structure. It is a chiral molecule with two stereoisomers, erythro and threo. Tropane can be synthesized from the hydrolysis of α-chloroacetic acid chloride and ammonia in the presence of sulfuric acid. The enolate anion formed by deprotonation reacts with hydrogen chloride to produce tropane. Tropane can also be synthesized through the reaction of 2-oxo-4-phenylbut-3-enenitrile with chlorine or sulfur.
