2,3-Dibromo-5-chlorothiophene is a tetramethylammonium salt that can be synthesized by the reaction of 2-bromothiophene with sodium perchlorate in dimethylformamide. The mechanism for this reaction is not yet known; however, it has been shown to produce yields of up to 75% and is mechanistically related to electrochemical processes. This compound can be used to investigate the effects of bromine substitution on the reactivity of thiophene derivatives. 2,3-Dibromo-5-chlorothiophene has also been shown to be an effective electrophile in cyclic voltammetry and cyclic mechanistic schemes.
