Benzyl 5-oxopyrrolidine-2-carboxylate is a hydrogenolysis product of benzylpenicillin, which is an antibiotic that inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. It has antibacterial activity and can be used to treat infections caused by penicillin-resistant bacteria. Benzyl 5-oxopyrrolidine-2-carboxylate is reactive with p-nitrophenyl esters at the carboxylic acid group, forming benzylp-nitrophenol. This reaction is reversible and can be used for detection of the antibiotic in urine. The compound also reacts with dipeptides and esters to form acylglycines, which are useful as starting materials for organic synthesis.
