4-(3-Pyridyl)-1-butanol is an activated form of the alcohol, 4-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanol. It is used in humans as a precursor to carcinogenic nitrosamines. 4-(3-Pyridyl)-1-butanol is metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes in animals to methylate tissues, such as the pancreas and cavity, and methylate DNA. This compound has been shown to be present in the nasal mucosa of rats following inhalation exposure. 4-(3-Pyridyl)-1-butanol is also found in high concentrations in cigarette smoke and has been shown to be generated from nitrosamines.
