- 3-Acetyl-1,3-oxazol-2(3H)-one
3-Acetyloxazolin-2-one is a vinylene that is used as a dienophile in the Diels-Alder reaction. This reaction requires a cycloadduct, which is generated by chlorination. The chlorination of 3-acetyloxazolin-2-one produces 2,4,6 dichloroacetophenone and 2,4,6 trichloroacetophenone. These two compounds are then hydrolyzed to produce 3-acetyloxazolin-2-one and 2,4,6 dichloroacetic acid. When heated with an acid or base at high temperature (autoclave), 3-acetyloxazolin-2-one undergoes elimination reactions to produce vinylene and acetamide. Halogenation of 3-acetyloxazolin-2 - one can be carried out by reacting it with chlorine gas in the presence of an alkali metal chloride or bromide salt
