The 13C-labelled stearic acid was synthesized from octadecanol and purified. The 13C-labelled stearic acid was analysed for its potential to be used as a dietary additive in infant formula, automotive lubricants, and innovative food applications. The transfer of the label from the stearic acid to the tissue or dietary component was studied by adding the 13C-labelled stearic acid to tissue or lipid extracts. It is stable under physiological conditions and has been shown to be compatible with synthetic antioxidants such as BHT.
