Aaptamine is a natural compound that has been shown to have significant cytotoxicity in vitro. It has been shown to inhibit the mitochondrial membrane potential and induce apoptosis in k562 cells. Aaptamine also binds to DNA with high affinity and specificity, which makes it an ideal candidate for treating skin cancer. The sponge species from which this compound was isolated, Halichondria okadai, is a marine organism with significant biological properties.
