4-Chlorobenzoic acid-d4 (4CBA) is a dehalogenase inhibitor that binds to the active site of hydrolytic enzymes. It has been shown to preferentially inhibit 4-chlorobenzoic acid dehalogenases and p-hydroxybenzoic acid dehalogenases. 4CBA also inhibits steroid hydroxylases and corticosteroid hydroxylases, which are enzymes that catalyze the conversion of cholesterol into bile acids or cortisol into cortisone, respectively. This drug inhibits the production of steroids by preventing the conversion of cholesterol into pregnenolone and progesterone, respectively.
4CBA binds to the enzyme's active site and blocks access for substrates, preventing catalysis from occurring.
