Methyl 2-(4-hydroxy-2-oxopyrrolidin-1-yl)acetate (CGP 4742) is a drug that has been used in clinical therapy for the treatment of epilepsy. It is a reversible inhibitor of glutamate release in the brain and has shown to be effective in treating seizures. CGP 4742 does not affect glycine or anhydride levels, but does have effects on piracetam and oxiracetam, which are also preparations for the treatment of epilepsy. CGP 4742 is stable to human serum albumin and is controllable with respect to its effect on the central nervous system.
