Hydrogen hexachloroiridate(IV) hydrate is a salt that can be prepared by electrolysis of an aqueous solution of hydrogen chloride and sodium chlorate. The compound has been studied for its use as a coating material. It has been shown to be effective in catalyzing electrocatalysis and in reducing emissions from automobiles. Hydrogen hexachloroiridate(IV) hydrate can also be used in the production of magnesium metal, which is important because it is difficult to find an inexpensive source of this metal. In nature, proton reduction takes place by the direct action of electron donors on the surface of transition metals such as magnesium or ruthenium. This process is called electrolysis.
