Camalexin is a type of phytoalexin that is produced by plants in response to infection. It has been shown to induce apoptosis by activating the caspase-dependent pathway. This activation is induced by the binding of camalexin to cytosolic Ca2+ and its subsequent release from mitochondria. Camalexin also induces apoptosis by inhibiting protein synthesis, as it binds to ribosomes and inhibits their function. Camalexin has been shown to be effective against pathogens such as Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus. It has minimal toxicity at low doses and may be an alternative treatment for cancer therapy.
