MDL 29913 is a potent and selective antagonist of the neurokinin-1 receptor that blocks the action of substance P. It has been shown to reduce both spontaneous activity and maximal response in the bladder, with no effect on blood pressure, when administered at high doses. MDL 29913 has been shown to bind to the high affinity binding site for substance P in homogenates of rat bladder and lung tissue. The functional studies have demonstrated that MDL 29913 can block the functions of substance P in both bladder and lung tissue. This drug has also been shown to be a potent antagonist at this site, inhibiting the responses induced by senktide (a substance P analogue).
