1-Benzyl 4-ethyl (2E)-but-2-enedioate is a heterocyclic compound that is structurally related to the anti-inflammatory agents piroxicam and indomethacin. It has shown efficacy in animal models for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and Huntington's disease. In addition, 1-benzyl 4-ethyl (2E)-but-2-enedioate has been found to be an effective inhibitor of inflammation. It blocks the production of prostaglandins by inhibiting cyclooxygenase activity. This inhibition leads to a decrease in the synthesis of proinflammatory mediators, such as TNFα and IL1β.
