VX-809 is a drug that is used to treat cystic fibrosis (CF). It is an orally administered small molecule corrector of the CFTR protein. VX-809 binds to the mutant F508del-CFTR protein in a manner that restores the function of CFTR and improves the transport of chloride ions across the cell membrane. VX-809 has been shown to correct defective CFTR protein levels and improve lung function in patients with CF.
The following are some of the ways VX-809 can be used:
1) To increase lung function in patients with cystic fibrosis who have a certain mutation in their F508del-CFTR gene.
2) To treat a certain type of kidney disease called diabetic nephropathy, which often occurs after diabetes mellitus is diagnosed.
3) To treat or prevent liver failure due to chronic hepatitis C virus infection.
4) To help relieve symptoms in people with chronic obstruct
