6-Bromo-2-iminocoumarin-3-carbonitrile (6BIMC) is an active methylene compound that has been shown to react with chlorinating agents. The reaction product of 6BIMC and chlorine gas is 6-bromo-2,4(1H,3H)-pyrimidinedione. This reaction was first discovered by the Swiss chemist Auguste Laurent in 1852. The active methylene group of 6BIMC can also be converted into a cyanoacetate group by reacting with methylene or ethyl cyanoacetate.
