Imatinib is a drug that inhibits the activity of tyrosine kinases, which are enzymes that transmit signals from outside the cell to the inside. Imatinib has been shown to inhibit the growth of malignant brain tumours in mice and human serum. The compound is also effective against myelogenous leukaemia cells and some other types of cancer. Imatinib has been shown to have a low bioavailability in vivo because it is hydrolyzed by hydrochloric acid and phenolic acid, as well as metal hydroxides. It also interacts with pluronic f127, which may be responsible for its anti-angiogenic effects.
