Ethyl 5-(bromomethyl)thiazole-2-carboxylate is an organic compound that is used as a precursor to pharmaceutical agents. It is made by first reacting butylamine with bromoethane in the presence of sulfuric acid, yielding ethyl sulfonanilide. The ethyl sulfonanilide is then reacted with chloroacetaldehyde in the presence of acid in order to form the desired product (ethyl 5-(bromomethyl)thiazole-2-carboxylate). This compound has been shown to be effective against hyperlipidemia and diabetes.
