5-FAM-Alkyne is a synthetic compound that has the reactive functional groups of aldehyde, amide, and triazole. It is used as a fluorescent probe in polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect nucleic acid sequences. The 5-FAM-Alkyne group reacts with the nucleotide bases of DNA or RNA, which is complementary to the 3’ or 5’ end. This reaction leads to the incorporation of one or two molecules of FAM into the DNA strand. The resulting product can be detected by fluorescence microscopy and spectrometry.
