It is used as a ligand for the preparation of nitroxides, which are useful as magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents. 2,6-Dibromo-4-iodopyridine has been shown to form complexes with platinum and palladium.
2,6-Dibromo-4-iodopyridine is also used in population studies because it is present in all cells. The triplet state of 2,6-dibromo-4-iodopyridine can be detected by electron spin resonance spectroscopy and has been shown to be capable of reducing nitrosonium ion radicals to produce radical anions.
