Sodium carbonate is a white, crystalline solid that is soluble in water. It is usually found as a mineral, but can also be synthetically produced. Sodium carbonate has the ability to react with magnesium and aluminium to form stable metal hydroxides. It has been shown that it is an inhibitor of epidermal growth factor (EGF) activity, which may have implications for the treatment of human skin diseases. Sodium carbonate has been used in pharmaceuticals as a buffer and chemical stabilizer. The use of sodium carbonate as an adsorbent was first reported in 1837 by Berzelius; however, its application for wastewater treatment did not become widespread until the 1970s. In some cases, it has been used in conjunction with hydrotalcite or other materials for particle removal from industrial processes.
