1,1™,3,3,3™,3™-Hexamethylindodicarbocyanine iodide is a type of carbocyanine dye that can be used to measure the mitochondrial membrane potential. It has been shown to be an effective indicator for apoptosis because mitochondria are involved in the process. The dye binds to annexin and superparamagnetic iron chloride in the mitochondrial membrane and changes its fluorescence properties. This technique is useful for determining the viability of cells during apoptosis.
