4-Phenylamino-benzonitrile is a fluorescent organic compound that emits light of a wavelength of about 488 nm. The excitons in this molecule are formed by the electron hopping between the aromatic ring and the amide nitrile group. This process is reversible, which results in an emission spectrum that includes peaks at wavelengths of 488 nm and 535 nm. The emission intensity can be tuned by changing the substituents on the phenyl ring, which can also be used to study functional groups. 4-Phenylamino-benzonitrile has been applied as a probe for cross-coupling reactions in devices such as cyclic voltammetry and electrochemiluminescence.
