This reaction produces a racemic mixture of alpha-(2-aminophenyl)benzylamine, which is then separated into its two optical isomers using methanol and tartaric acid. The optically pure form can be isolated from the racemic mixture using sodium hydroxide, which converts it to the corresponding salt. Alpha-(2-aminophenyl)benzylamine has a boiling point of 223 °C and is soluble in most organic solvents, making it a versatile intermediate for many chemical reactions.
