Description:

Mirtazapine is an antidepressant drug that blocks the reuptake of serotonin, noradrenaline, and dopamine. Mirtazapine has been shown to be effective in treating depression in geriatric patients. The serum aminotransferase levels were not statistically different between the two groups. There are no known drug interactions with mirtazapine. Mirtazapine has been shown to improve mood in both the intent-to-treat population as well as those who completed the study, although weight gain and sedation may occur. Mirtazapine can cause extrapyramidal reactions, such as akathisia and tardive dyskinesia. These reactions are more common among elderly patients, so caution should be used when prescribing this drug to this population.
