5-Fluoronaphthalen-1-ol is a colorless liquid that has a weak odor. It is soluble in water, ethanol, and ether. The compound can be used as an intermediate for the production of dyes, herbicides, and pharmaceuticals. 5-Fluoronaphthalen-1-ol has been found to have intermolecular hydrogen bonding with the neighboring molecules. This intramolecular hydrogen bond occurs when one H atom bridges two oxygen atoms in a molecule. This bond is stronger than an intramolecular bond because it involves more than one atom. The nmr spectrum of 5-fluoronaphthalen-1-ol shows peaks at 3.5 ppm and 4.2 ppm indicating the presence of an intramolecular hydrogen bond between the hydroxyl group and the methylene group adjacent to it on either side of the ring in this molecule (3).
