Glycol ethers are a class of organic compounds that are used as solvents in a variety of industrial applications. Glycol ethers are also used to produce polymers, plasticizers, and surfactants. The glycol ethers most commonly used in industry include ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, butanediols, tripropylene glycol, dipropylene glycol and tetrapropylene glycol. Glycol ethers can be classified by their molecular weight and the number of carbon atoms in the aliphatic group attached to the oxygen atom. For example, ethylene glycol is classified as an aliphatic compound with two carbon atoms attached to the oxygen atom (i.e., CH2OH).
Glycol ethers are also used as microbial agents for sterilization purposes. They have been shown to be effective against fungi and bacteria such as Aspergillus niger and Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
